Republicans reportedly plan to challenge Mike Johnson for speaker by nominating another candidate
Speaker Mike Johnson said that he was confident he would still be speaker next year.
Some House Republicans are planning to challenge House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., for his role by nominating another candidate, according to an exclusive report from The Hill.
Anonymous sources told the outlet that during internal GOP elections on Wednesday, some Republicans will nominate another candidate to compete for Johnson's role as speaker.
As of now it is not known who these Republicans would nominate and one source expressed concerns that this opposition plan may not work.
Johnson said that he was confident he would still be speaker next year.
“I am [confident]. I’m talking with everyone,” he said, according to The Hill. “I think you’ll have total unity in the party.”
Some Republicans have pushed back against Johnson during his time as speaker, with Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., threatening to oust him in May. That effort ultimately failed.
