Purported Senate border deal ‘dead on arrival,’ says Speaker Johnson
In a letter to colleagues, Johnson expressed doubts Biden would enforce new immigration laws when he won’t enforce the ones currently on the books.
House Speaker Mike Johnson said that a Senate border deal, which ties emergency aid to Ukraine to immigration, is “dead on arrival,” assuming reports about its terms are accurate.
Citing a letter from the Louisiana Republican written Friday to colleagues, Bloomberg reported, the speaker said the GOP-led House would focus on impeaching Homeland Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas “as soon as possible” after a committee votes on articles next week.
Johnson didn’t specify to which parts of the purported Senate plan he objected. But during talks on the proposed draft, issues were raised with changes to asylum policy and humanitarian aid.
In his letter, Johnson, according to Bloomberg, also expressed doubts President Joe Biden would enforce new immigration laws when he doesn't appear to be enforcing ones currently on the books.
