Senate confirms Pam Bondi as Trump's attorney general
Bondi was confirmed in a 54-46 vote. Pennsylvania Democratic Sen. John Fetterman voted with Republicans.
The Senate on Tuesday night confirmed President Donald Trump's nominee Pam Bondi as attorney general in a 54-46 vote.
Trump nominated Bondi for the post at the end of last year, after former Florida GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz withdrew his name from consideration. Bondi, however, has plenty of experience, serving as Florida's attorney general from 2011-2019.
The confirmation vote fell primarily along party lines, with just Pennsylvania Democratic Sen. John Fetterman siding with Republicans, according to CNN. Fetterman claimed that he felt Bondi was qualified, but not his "ideal" choice for the role.
Bondi previously said that if she's confirmed she will focus on enforcing federal law without considering political affiliations.
"Politics has to be taken out of this system," Bondi told the committee. "This department has been weaponized for years and years and years, and it has to stop."
