Senate advances illegal migrant-related Laken Riley Act toward final vote

Senators voted 61-35 to end the debate on the bill. Every Republican senator voted for it along with 10 Democrats.

The Senate on Friday voted to advance the illegal-immigrant related Laken Riley Act bringing the legislation a step closer final passage and Donld Trump signing it his first day in office Monday.

However, the bill must first be returned the House, where it originated, because it has been amended in the Senate, according to The Hill newspaper

The legislation will give the U.S. authority to detain illegal immigrants who have been accused of theft-related crimes.

Senators voted 61-35 on Friday to end the debate on the bill. Every Republican senator voted for it along with 10 Democrats.

Some of the Democrats who supported advancing the bill include Sens. Ruben Gallego, of Arizona; Gary Peters, of Michigan; and Mark Warner, of Virginia.

“This bill is a small but critical step to resolving the Biden border crisis – the first of many I might add,” said Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D.
