Senators on Wednesday voted to send President Donald Trump's pick for Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and pick to lead the Small Business Administration Kelly Loeffler out of their respective committees.

The Senate Commerce Committee voted Lutnick out of committee in a 16-12 vote, with all Democrats except Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman opposing the nomination, according to Reuters.

Lutnick, who was CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald on 9/11, a day the company lost 658 employees, including his brother, will be tasked with leading the administration's tariff and trade agenda. The nominee testified during his confirmation hearing last week that he has advised Trump to pursue across-the-board tariffs to rebuild reciprocity with the U.S.'s trading partners.

Loeffler was also advanced out of committee by senators on the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee, in a 12-7 vote., per Fox News. Loeffler has pledged to donate her $208,000 federal salary to charity if confirmed. She previously donated her $174,000 salary to charity as senator.

Both nominees will now head to the Senate floor, where a debate can begin on their nominations in front of the full chamber. A final vote will take place after the chamber invokes cloture, and they will need a simple majority to be confirmed.
