Trump says McCarthy 'deserves the shot' to be House Speaker
Trump said he is "friendly" with many people who are against McCarthy, but he warned against challenging the California lawmaker's bid for speaker.
Former President Donald Trump said he believes House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy "deserves the shot" to be Speaker of the House, despite the fact that many of Trump's top allies in Congress stand against the California Republican leader becoming speaker.
"Kevin has worked very hard," Trump said Friday, Breitbart News reported. "I think he deserves the shot. Hopefully, he's going to be very strong and going to be very good and he's going to do what everybody wants."
So far, five strong pro-Trump Republican congressmen have said they do not plan on supporting McCarthy, and Rep. Andy Biggs of Arizona has mounted two challenges to McCarthy for House leadership positions.
Without specifying any names, Trump said he is "friendly" with many people who are against McCarthy, but he warned against challenging the California lawmaker's bid for speaker.
"Now, I'm friendly with a lot of those people who are against Kevin. I think almost every one of them are very much inclined toward Trump, and me toward them. But I have to tell them, and I have told them, you're playing a very dangerous game," Trump said. “You could end up with the worse situation."
