Supreme Court Associate Justice Samuel Alito on Monday confirmed that he would recuse himself from a climate change case, without offering an explanation.

"I am writing to inform the parties that Justice Alito has determined that he will not continue to participate in this case," the clerk of the court wrote to the relevant counsels.

The issue at hand is whether the city of Boulder, Colo., may sue oil companies over climate change. Alito had faced pressure to step aside due to his holdings in oil and gas companies, though he does not own stock in any company that is party to the suit, CNN reported.

His recusal comes as the Supreme Court faces heightened scrutiny over ethics disclosures and recusals, with Senate Democrats increasingly pressuring the court to establish a code of conduct.
