Chinese hackers, government officials charged by US in massive hacking campaign
The U.S. Treasury Department was one of the targets of the hacking campaign.
Two Chinese law enforcement officers and 10 Chinese hackers have been charged in connection with a massive hacking campaign that targeted news agencies and U.S. agencies, the Justice Department announced Wednesday.
Some of the hackers were directed by China’s Ministry of Public Security, which received stolen information as part of the operation, according to The Associated Press.
A few of the hackers are reportedly with a company called I-Soon which has stolen data from other countries in the past and sold it to China.
The Treasury Department was one of the targets of the hacking campaign.
"These malicious cyber actors, acting as freelancers or as employees of i-Soon, conducted computer intrusions at the direction of the PRC’s MPS and Ministry of State Security (MSS) and on their own initiative," the DOJ said in a statement.
