The attorneys for Tennessee death row inmate Christa Pike said in a court filing Wednesday night that their client is still alive after two lethal injections in their latest attempt to stop the execution from moving forward.

Pike, who was convicted of killing former classmate Colleen Slemmer in 1995 when she was just 18-years-old, was initially scheduled to be executed Wednesday morning, but it was delayed after an appeals court stayed the execution.

The Supreme Court later ruled the execution could move forward if it was carried out before midnight.

Pike's attorneys claimed in the court filing that witnesses said at 8:26 p.m. local time that “executioners had injected both syringes of lethal injection chemicals and Pike is still alive and snoring," according to NBC News.

The attorneys said Pike “has not lost consciousness and still has a heartbeat,” and that curtains to the death chamber “have gone down twice."

"This execution is causing Ms. Pike unnecessary agony and occurring in violation of her right to be executed free of cruel and unusual punishment," the attorneys added, according to USA Today.

Pike's attorneys previously argued their client was young at the time of the crime, suffered from an untreated mental illness after a childhood of brutal sexual abuse and that she would not be given the same sentence if the crime occurred today.

If the execution is carried out, Pike will be the first female inmate executed in Tennessee in more than 200 years.
