U.S. District Judge James Boasberg on Thursday ordered officials in the Trump administration to keep records related to a Signal chat that was accidentally shared with a reporter last week.

The ruling was part of an American Oversight lawsuit filed Tuesday, after reports surfaced that a reporter was added to a national security chat on the encrypted messaging app Signal, which contained sensitive information related to U.S. strikes on the Houthis in Yemen.

Boasberg issued the order after a hearing on the lawsuit, which seeks to “prevent the unlawful destruction of federal records and to compel Defendants to fulfill their legal obligations to preserve and recover federal records created through unauthorized use of Signal for sensitive national security decision-making," according to MSNBC.

The judge sided with the plaintiffs, instructing Trump national security officials to "promptly make best efforts to preserve all Signal communications from March 11-15, 2025.”

Boasberg is also handling a separate case against the Trump administration related to deportation flights of suspected members of the Venezuelan Tren de Aragua gang.
