Judge orders arrest of former KY Gov Matt Bevin, sentences him to 60 days in jail over contempt

A judge issued an arrest warrant Tuesday for former Kentucky GOP Gov. Matt Bevin, finding him in contempt for repeatedly ignored court orders to turn over financial documents.

The arrest warrant was issued just days before Bevin is expected to appear in a trial in Louisville, on whether he owes child support to estranged son Jonah Bevin.

Jefferson Family Court Judge Angela Johnson ruled Bevin must serve 60 days in county jail or post a $500 cash bond and produce “financial records, bank statements, tax returns and all other documents that would show the receipt of income.”

Johnson previously gave Bevin until Monday to produce the documents or face possible jail time, according to the Kentucky Lantern.

“I have no choice but to hold you in contempt of court for violating the court’s order,” Johnson said. “You didn’t do what you were supposed to do when you were supposed to do it.”

The order comes after Bevin attempted to have Johnson removed Monday, citing an alleged bias that was allegedly motivated by her desire for media attention because of his prominence as the state's governor from 2015-2019.

The warrant also comes after Bevin failed to appear at Tuesday's hearing in person, claiming he had to travel out of state to attend the funeral of his ex-wife's father and was on his way back to Kentucky.

Bevin is expected to appear in Kentucky on Friday for the child support case. Jonah Bevin, who is 19, alleged that his parents abandoned him when he was a minor and owe him child support and help with completing his education.
