Police conclude Rep. Walorski's vehicle at fault in crash that killed congresswoman, three others

Indiana authorities have released a report concluding the car accident that killed Rep. Jackie Walorski and three others was caused when the car carrying the congresswoman tried to pass a vehicle.

Walorski, a Republican, was killed in the car accident along with her communications director Emma Thompson and district director Zachery Potts. The driver of the other vehicle, who was driving alone, also was killed.

"Our investigation has determined that the cause of the crash was driving left of center with a contributing factor of excessive speed," the Elkhart County Sheriff's Office said in a press release on Friday, Fox News reported. "The at-fault vehicle was the Toyota RAV4 driven by Zachery Potts."  

According to the report, Walorski's vehicle had been going 82 miles per hour and five seconds before the crash, the motor had been at "idle speed," also known as "coasting."

"The airbag control module data also showed that the driver of the Toyota RAV4 steered the vehicle left just prior to the crash," the report continued. "The amount of steering input was consistent with normal operation of the vehicle and was consistent with the eyewitness account."

The report concluded that the evidence came down to "someone attempting to pass another vehicle on a two-lane roadway."

As a result of the congresswoman's death, the Indiana Republican Party voted for Rudy Yakym to replace Walorski on the November ballot to represent the second district of Indiana.
