Ryan Routh asks judge to recuse herself from Trump assassination attempt case

Ryan Routh, the suspect in the second assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, asked Judge Aileen Cannon on Thursday to recuse herself from the case because of her relationship with the former president.

Attorneys for Routh, who is the sole suspect in the assassination attempt on Trump at a golf course in Palm Beach, Florida, said Cannon's reputation when it comes to Trump could create an appearance of partiality.

Cannon was randomly assigned the case last month, but was appointed by Trump during his presidency, and he has praised her handling of his classified documents case. 

“Mr. Trump is the current Republican candidate for President in next month’s election. On the campaign trail, he has repeatedly praised Your Honor for her rulings in his case,” Routh’s attorneys wrote in the motion. “As the alleged victim here, he has a significant stake in the outcome of this case too. Were he to become President in the future, he would have authority to nominate Your Honor to a federal judgeship on a higher court were a vacancy to arise."

Routh is currently scheduled to be tried in the case on Nov. 18.
