Supreme Court Justices Amy Coney Barrett and Elena Kagan are expected to testify on Capitol Hill next week about the high court's budget request, marking the first time since 2019 that justices will face members of Congress.

The two justices will meet with lawmakers on both the Senate and House Financial Services Appropriations subcommittees on July 14 to discuss the court's $225.1 million budget request for fiscal year 2027, according to Roll Call

The Supreme Court said $207 million of the request will go to salaries and $18.1 million would be for taking care of the Supreme Court building and grounds, including $14.6 million for security enhancements.

The federal judiciary overall is seeking $9.7 billion, which would largely go to increased staff and staff salaries across the federal appellate and district courts. The request is approximately $500 million more than 2026.

The expected hearing will mark the first time that Supreme Court justices appeared before Congress in years. In 2019, Kagan and Justice Samuel Alito appeared in front of the House, while former Supreme Court Justices Stephen Breyer and Antonin Scalia testified in front of the Senate in 2011, according to the Washington Examiner.
