Texas Supreme Court allows law banning gender transition treatments for minors to go into effect
Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott signed the bill into law in June.
The Texas Supreme Court is allowing the state law banning gender transition treatments for minors to go into effect Friday, setting Texas up to become the most populous state with restrictions on this type of medical treatments.
The court did not address whether the law is constitutional, nor did it explain the reasoning and a full hearing on the matter is expected, according to The Associated Press.
Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott signed the bill into law in June.
The legislation will prevent transgender children from being prescribed hormone therapies, puberty blockers and gender transition surgeries, and children who are already on such medications are required to be weaned off.
Texas is set to join the more than 20 states that already have laws in place restricting some transgender treatments for children.
