Transgender customer alleges discrimination after Illinois Walmarts denied service

Walmart faces a discrimination complaint from an Illinois resident who alleges the two separate locations of the chain refused service on the basis of the individual's transgender status.

Skylar Hyatt was born a woman and has since chosen to identify as male. Hyatt has not yet gone through the process of legally changing one's name due to financial constraints, according to The Hill.

The complaint alleges that Hyatt twice attempted to cash a money order at Walmart but was denied. Walmart employees reportedly refused to cash the order because the driver's license Hyatt presented displayed a name other than the one given.

Hyatt subsequent filed a complaint with Illinois' Human Rights Department. “As a corporation that claims to support LGBTQ rights across the country, my hope is that Walmart can make sure that no other transgender person experiences this discrimination again,” Hyatt said, per the outlet.

“A lot of young people – young, transgender people – will rely on a place like Walmart to process their first paycheck or a gift from a family member,” Hyatt continued. “I don’t want them to go through this sort of discrimination.”

Walmart told Changing America that the company does not “tolerate discrimination of any kind" and would "respond to the claim as appropriate.”
