Trump admin housing official refers Swalwell for investigation over mortgage fraud allegations

"As the most vocal critic of Donald Trump over the last decade and as the only person who still has a surviving lawsuit against him, the only thing I am surprised about is that it took him this long to come after me," Swalwell said Thursday.

Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte on Wednesday referred California Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell to the Justice Department for investigation over allegations of mortgage and tax fraud related to a Washington, D.C., home.

The move comes after Pulte sent criminal referrals to the Justice Department for New York Attorney General Letitia James, California Democratic Sen. Adam Schiff and Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook on mortgage fraud allegations.

The referral centers on allegations that Swalwell received several million dollars worth of loans and refinancing by declaring his primary residence as Washington, D.C., instead of California, and suggests the department probe whether the congressman committed mortgage fraud, state and local tax fraud, and insurance fraud, sources told NBC News.

"As the most vocal critic of Donald Trump over the last decade and as the only person who still has a surviving lawsuit against him, the only thing I am surprised about is that it took him this long to come after me," Swalwell said Thursday.

“Like [former FBI Director] James Comey and John Bolton, Adam Schiff and Lisa Cook, Letitia James and the dozens more to come — I refuse to live in fear in what was once the freest country in the world,” he continued. “Of course, I will not end my lawsuit against him. And I will not stop speaking out against the President and speaking up for Californians.”

Comey was indicted in Virginia federal court on charges of obstructing Congress and making a false statement, while Bolton was indicted on charges related to the illegal transmission of national defense information, and illegal retention of national defense information.
