The Trump administration on Friday asked the Supreme Court for permission to resume the deportation of illegal Venezuelan migrants and suspected gang members under the country's decades-old Alien Enemies Act – following a lower court putting a temporary hold on the process.

The roughly 200 migrants, alleged members of the Tren de Aragua gang, were sent to an El Salvador prison earlier this month. Trump used that law to deport them without a trial.

The Supreme Court request comes two days after an appeals court upheld the lower court's initial, temporary ban.

The Justice Department in making its case to the high court argued federal courts should not be allowed to interfere with diplomatic negotiations, according to The Associated Press.
