The Trump administration on Monday asked the Supreme Court to weigh in on an ongoing legal case over President Donald Trump's efforts to shut down foreign aid.

The move follows the D.C. Appeals Court upholding a lower court order from U.S. District Judge Amir Ali blocking Trump from rescinding the funds. Aid groups that expected to compete for the funding brought the challenge, Reuters reported.

Trump previously moved to block roughly $4 billion in funding through a so-called "pocket rescission" after Congress approved roughly $11 billion in aid.

“To be clear, no one disputes that defendants have significant discretion in how to spend the funds at issue, and the court is not directing defendants to make payments to any particular recipients,” Judge Ali wrote in the earlier decision. “But defendants do not have any discretion as to whether to spend the funds.”
