Two teenagers who were accused of assaulting former Department of Government Efficiency staffer Edward Coristine were given probation by a judge.

On Tuesday, two 15-year-olds who allegedly assaulted 19-year-old Coristine in August while they were trying to carjack a vehicle in Washington, D.C., according to police, received probation sentences, local TV news station USA9.

The 15-year-old boy was sentenced to 12 months' probation, while the girl pleaded guilty to simple assault and was sentenced to nine months' probation. The girl's lawyer had asked for 4.5 months' probation.

The teens were both ordered to not contact each other or spend any time in the nation's capital outside of school, job, or family obligations. The judge said that the purpose of juvenile court is to rehabilitate, not punish, and that she hopes the teens learn from their probationary period.

The assault on Coristine led to President Trump's federal takeover of the Metropolitan Police Department and the deployment of the National Guard in D.C. in August.
