Mexican government slams DeSantis' law banning ID for illegal migrants
DeSantis has cracked down on illegal immigration in his state by enhancing penalties for human smuggling and restricting employment eligibility, among other things.
The government of Mexico slammed the bill signed into law by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis that prohibits counties and towns in the state from providing funding to issue identification documents to illegal migrants.
The measure will "lead to acts of discrimination and racial profiling," Mexico warned Saturday.
The law "will affect the human rights of thousands of Mexicans, including children, and will exacerbate hostile environments, which may lead to hate crimes and acts against the migrant community," the government also said. "Criminalization is not the way to solve the issue of undocumented immigration."
Illegal migration has risen over the past several years as migrants make makeshift vessels and use the Florida Keys as a landing point to access the rest of the United States.
