Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told reporters Thursday that his talks with President Donald Trump in Davos, Switzerland, went well but indicated that the critical issue of territory in its war with Russia remains unresolved.

In recent weeks, negotiations to end the Russia-Ukraine war have focused on security guarantees for a post-war Ukraine to ensure that Russia does not invade it again after the war ends. U.S. negotiators have also pushed Ukraine to abandon its eastern Donbas region as part of a peace deal.

Zelensky said the discussion with Trump was productive and finalized the security guarantees. He also said a deal on economic recovery for Ukraine after the war with Russia was almost ready, according to Reuters.

"A good meeting with [President Trump] — productive and substantive," he wrote on X. "We discussed the work of our teams, and practically every day there are meetings or communication ... We also spoke today about air defense for Ukraine. Our previous meeting with President Trump helped strengthen the protection of our skies, and I hope that this time we will reinforce it further as well."

Zelensky did not state whether discussions on Ukraine territories took place in the meeting.

Trump also characterized the meeting as "good," telling reporters that ending the war in Europe was an "ongoing process," but that U.S. envoy for Ukraine Steve Witkoff and U.S. envoy Jared Kushner were heading to Moscow Thursday afternoon to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"If both sides want to solve this, we're going to get it solved," Witkoff said.
