The Department of Justice on Wednesday announced a large-scale crackdown on criminal tax fraud, announcing sweeping charges against individuals and organizations across multiple states.

The DOJ cited several cases involving tax preparers filing fraudulent refunds and those bad actors receiving prison time. An official also pointed to instances of foreign nationals pocketing withheld funds for Social Security to use for their own benefit.

"As the chief executive officer of the IRS, I want to express my appreciation for everything our agents do to serve taxpayers," IRS CEO Frank Bisignano said. "Improving tax compliance is one of my top priorities."

The presser conference comes as Vice President JD Vance's federal anti-fraud task force has ramped up its efforts to identify misuse of public funds.
