Federal prosecutor in Massachusetts under investigation by Justice Department's inspector general
U.S. Attorney Rachael Rollins is being investigated over ethics concerns by the Department of Justice IG.
The Department of Justice's internal watchdog, the Office of Inspector General (OIG) is reportedly investigating one of the 93 U.S. attorneys, Rachael Rollins, due to ethics concerns and possible violations of the Hatch Act.
The investigation involves Rollins reportedly attending a Democratic National Committee meeting in July and the use of her personal cell phone to conduct official business, according to two people briefed about the investigation, reports the Associated Press.
Rollins is also being investigated for taking a trip to California that was paid for by an unnamed outside group, and for attending a political fundraiser which featured First Lady Jill Biden.
Back in August, there was concern that Rollins attending the DNC meeting violated the Hatch Act, which is an act that limits specific political activities that government workers are allowed to do.
Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton said that her appearance at that meeting did violate the Hatch Act and she should be held accountable for that.
However, Rollins claimed in July via Twitter she did have permission to go and meet the First Lady.
"I wasn’t asked for a comment before this ran," Rollins said, referring to a Boston Herald article about the situation. "It's almost as if the Herald didn't want to know I had approval to meet Dr. Biden & left early to speak at 2 community events last night."
The investigation is still ongoing.
