Kamala Harris announces creation of new office to support states enforcing 'red flag' laws
Red flag laws allow the state to temporarily remove a firearm from someone deemed to be a potential threat.
Vice President Kamala Harris on Saturday announced the creation of a new office that will support states that implement "red flag" laws to combat gun violence.
She made the announcement at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, where the mass shooting of high school students occurred in 2018 in which 17 people died.
“The shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School occurred after there were clear warning signs, but there were no tools to remove the shooter’s firearm,” the White House said in a statement.
The goal of the National Extreme Risk Protection Order Resource Center will be to provide states with resources to put red flag laws into place.
Red flag laws allow the state to temporarily remove a firearm from someone deemed to be a potential threat.
Harris called on the 29 states that don't have red flag laws to enact them, according to The Guardian.
