Secretary of State Marco Rubio is expressing support for Haitian Prime Minister Alix Fils-Aimé as a Haitian temporary council seeks his removal.

"Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke today with Haitian Prime Minister Alix Fils-Aimé to reaffirm U.S. support for Haiti’s stability and security," State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said in a statement on Friday,

Pigott also said Rubio emphasized the importance of Fils-Aimé's continued tenure as prime minister to combat terrorist gangs and stabilize the island. .

In addition, Rubio is demanding the Transitional Presidential Council be "dissolved" by Feb. 7 "without corrupt actors seeking to interfere in Haiti’s path to elected governance for their own gains, Pigott also said.

The U.S. and other countries have issued warnings ahead of the council's dissolution date, the Latin Times reported. The deadline was set on the assumption that Haiti would have held elections by then, but that has not occurred.
