Texas GOP Sen. Ted Cruz on Thursday called Attorney General Merrick Garland the most partisan and politicizing attorney general in U.S. history, during a main-stage speech at the 2023 CPAC event.

"Merrick Garland, I believe, is the most partisan and politicizing attorney general our nation has ever seen," said Cruz, one day after he grilled the attorney general on Capitol Hill over such issues as the Justice Department's response to protests outside the homes of conservative Supreme Court justices in August 2022.

The high court that summer struck down Roe v. Wade, ending federal protection for abortions, sparking a nationwide wave of protests.

"Garland spent all day before the Judiciary Committee in testimony," Cruz also said. "He would not answer a straight question at all. Garland looks at you like 'How dare you ask me a question?' and the guy was a judge for 20 years."

Cruz also said: "What is happening at the Department of Justice is heartbreaking because it has turned into a political weapon for the Democrats."
