Trump praises Patel as the 'one guy' to fix the 'very corrupt' FBI
"What we want to do — Kash is the one to do it," Trump said. "He’s the one guy that’s gonna do it. Kash will straighten it out. We have great confidence that we can make the FBI great again.”
President Donald Trump on Monday told reporters that his pick for FBI Director Kash Patel is the "one guy" who can fix the "very corrupt" bureau, as the nominee awaits Senate confirmation.
Patel faced his confirmation hearing last week, where he told senators that he would bring integrity, transparency and honesty back to the FBI. The bureau has faced allegations of corruption under former FBI Director Christopher Wray.
Trump highlighted some of those corruption and weaponization accusations in remarks on Monday, including that they targeted him by raiding his Mar-a-Lago resort over allegations that he improperly took classified documents out of the White House at the end of his first term.
“Look at what they’ve done in terms of weaponization. Look at what they’ve done to a political opponent. Probably got me elected by what they did,” Trump told reporters, according to The Hill. "But you know what? We have to have pristine, beautiful, perfect law enforcement. And what we want to do — Kash is the one to do it. He’s the one guy that’s gonna do it. Kash will straighten it out. We have great confidence that we can make the FBI great again.”
Trump added that the bureau was a "very corrupt institution" that has treated him and a lot of his allies "very poorly."
The comments come after Trump made other efforts to reform the agency, including by firing some key members of the bureau and by reassigning or demoting some of the bureau's other top brass.
Trump also eliminated dozens of Justice Department attorneys last week that were involved in the January 6 investigations and who were aligned with former special prosecutor Jack Smith.
