Two people were reportedly injured Thursday in a shooting that involved a federal officer in Portland, Oregon, according to local police.

The status of the two people was not immediately clear, but the pair have been described as a male and a female, ABC News reported. The victims have been transported to a local hospital.

The incident, which took place at approximately 2:30 p.m. local time, allegedly involved U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers.

The Department of Homeland Security said in a post on X that the agents were conducting a targeted vehicle stop at the time of the incident, and both people in the vehicle were alleged members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua. The passenger, who was the target, was also allegedly in the country illegally.

"When agents identified themselves to the vehicle occupants, the driver weaponized his vehicle and attempted to run over the law enforcement agents," DHS said in the post. "Fearing for his life and safety, an agent fired a defensive shot. The driver drove off with the passenger, fleeing the scene."

The incident comes a day after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer fatally shot a woman in Minneapolis who was allegedly attempting to run agents over with her car.

"We are still in the early stages of this incident," Portland Police Chief Bob Day said in a statement. "We understand the heightened emotion and tension many are feeling in the wake of the shooting in Minneapolis, but I am asking the community to remain calm as we work to learn more."

The FBI's Portland office said it was investigating the incident, according to the Associated Press.
