Video appears to show Atlanta police shooting black man after he steals police weapon
The subject may have grabbed an officer's taser prior to being shot.
Video circulating on social media Saturday afternoon appeared to depict a black man being shot by Atlanta police officers after he stole an officer's Taser weapon, an incident which could serve to inflame tensions as anti-police brutality protests continue across the United States.
The graphic video shows two officers struggling with the subject, attempting to subdue him as the man struggles against them. At one point he reaches for an officer's yellow Taser. "Hands off the Taser!" an officer can be heard saying.
After tussling with the officers further, the man appears to grab the Taser from the officer and begin running away. The footage appears to indicate that the officers shot the man several seconds later. The video does not depict the actual shooting itself; it is unclear if the subject was facing the offers or if he was shot while fleeing. An Atlanta city councilman said that the police chief claimed the man was shot in the back.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation later said in a statement that the victim, Rayshard Brooks, was in possession of an officer's Taser during the incident. The bureau said he later died at a hospital after surgery.
Officers had reportedly been called to the scene, at a Wendy's restaurant, after Brooks was seen sleeping in his car in the restaurant's parking lot. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said he failed a sobriety test prior to the fatal struggle.
