5 US service members die during training mission in Mediterranean, military says
The U.S. has deployed additional forces to the region amid rising tensions with Israel's war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
Five U.S. service members died when a military aircraft "suffered a mishap" during training over the eastern Mediterranean Sea, the U.S. European Command said Sunday.
The incident occurred Friday evening and is currently under investigation, the U.S. military said. "However, we can definitively say that the aircraft sortie was purely related to training and there are no indications of hostile activity."
The military confirmed Sunday that five people died, according to The Associated Press.
