President Joe Biden on Friday warned that Iran would likely attack Israel in the near future and vowed U.S. support for the country in the event of such an assault.

"We are devoted to the defense of Israel. We will support Israel and help defend Israel and Iran will not succeed," he said, according to The Hill, before adding that he expected Tehran to mount an assault "sooner rather than later."

The expected Iranian strike would likely come as retaliation for a suspected Israeli attack on April 1, targeting Tehran's embassy in Damascus, Syria. The strike dispatched Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Brig. Gen. Mohammad Reza Zahedi and Brig. Gen. Hossein Amirullah.

Iran is known to provide support to both Hamas and Hezbollah, as well as the Yemen-based Houthi movement. Israel is currently embroiled in a conflict in Gaza that stems from an Oct. 7 Hamas raid.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have subsequently worked to bolster air defense capabilities in anticipation of large-scale missile assaults.
