U.S. Border Patrol agents shot and killed a thief who was stealing from migrants as they crossed the U.S.-Mexico border into California, officials said.
A Border Patrol Tactical unit agent shot and killed a man who crossed into the San Diego sector early Sunday morning, Fox News reported.
Bandits in that area had been crossing into a remote area of the U.S., stealing from the migrants and fleeing to Mexico. Border Patrol surveillance technology has captured images of such robberies previously.
Border Patrol agents responded Sunday morning to a report of "bandit activity," when they discovered a small group of thugs stealing from migrants who were walking to an area to surrender and be processed by U.S. officials.
One of the thieves was shot and killed while the rest returned to Mexico. No Border Patrol agents were injured during the incident.
Meanwhile, Customs and Border Protection recorded a record number of illegal immigrant encounters last fiscal year, and it appears that this fiscal year is on track to be even higher at the southern border.
