The Department of Homeland Security said Thursday that federal agents involved in a shooting earlier this week in Houston were not wearing body cameras because the equipment had not been issued yet.

The statement comes after Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents on Tuesday fatally shot Lorenzo Salgado Araujo after he allegedly attempted to run them over with his vehicle.

DHS said the agents were conducting a targeted operation to arrest an allegedly illegal migrant when they attempted to stop a vehicle that Salgado Araujo was driving.

When ICE was asked specifically whether agents were looking for him, the agency said officers had been watching a property where they had previously observed two white vans, according to the Associated Press.

“Officers were almost at the target’s address when they observed a white van with an individual who resembled the target," the agency said. "Officers then initiated the vehicle stop."

The agency also told the news outlet that the agents did not have body cameras because issuing the cameras was delayed by Democrats and a federal government shutdown. The agents involved in the incident were reportedly expected to receive the cameras in the next 60 days.
