The Los Angeles Police Department has declared an "unlawful assembly" order for the protests in the city's downtown against recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement sweeps. 

The issue was ordered Sunday afternoon, as the protests turned increasingly destructive and violent. 

On Monday, the city appeared mostly quiet, after protesters, apparently including activists and agitators, clashed with law enforcement, torched self-driving cars and blocked streets. 

“An UNLAWFUL ASSEMBLY for the area of the Civic Center part of Los Angeles has been declared,” the Los Angeles Police Department posted on X Sunday night.  “Those with Cell Phones in the area of the Civic Center have received the alert.”

President Trump on Saturday, amid escalating protests outside a federal detention center in the city, activated roughly 2,000 members of the California National Guard – who so far have been deployed only to protect federal buildings.

California Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom on Sunday said the state would sue the Trump administration to block it from using federal powers to unilaterally deploy a state's National Guard.
