A key lawmaker this weekend expressed ignorance of President Donald Trump's goals for Venezuela amid escalating tensions with Caracas.

Trump's Department of War in recent months has conducted a number of strikes on suspected drug boats operating out of the country and the president has suggested they may pursue land strikes. At present, naval vessels remain off the coast of Venezuela and Trump has not definitively stated his plans for the country.

“I do not know what this president’s goal vis-a-vis Venezuela is,” Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., told ABC News. “I do fear that boots on the ground in Venezuela could be a disaster.”

Trump has not definitively stated that he plans to overthrow the Venezuelan government, though he has opined that President Nicolás Maduro's "days are numbered."

Earlier this year, the Department of Justice designated Maduro as the leader of a major drug cartel and increased the bounty for his capture.
