'A strong president prevents wars': Nikki Haley backs Trump at Republican convention
"A strong president does not start wars," Haley said. "A strong president prevents wars."
One time Donald Trump rival Nikki Haley endorsed Trump for president at the Republican convention in Milwaukee on Tuesday night, claiming that the country needs his national security policies.
Haley, who served as the United States ambassador to the United Nations during Trump's first administration, reflected on how Russian President Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine during former President Barack Obama's administration in 2014 by taking over the Crimea, and now is invading again under President Joe Biden.
“But when Donald Trump was president, Putin did nothing … no invasions, no wars. That was no accident. Putin didn’t attack Ukraine because he knew Donald Trump was tough,” she said. "A strong president does not start wars, a strong president prevents wars."
Haley, who was invited to the convention at the last minute after she released the delegates that she won during the primaries to unite behind Trump, said the Republican Party needs to expand its voter base, and that Trump has her "strong endorsement," because the country is at a "critical moment."
“We are so much better when we are bigger. We are stronger when we welcome people into our party who have different backgrounds and experiences,” the former ambassador said. “In this moment we have a chance to put aside our differences and focus on what unites us and strengthens our country."
The former South Carolina governor also emphasized that voters do not need to agree with Trump "100% of the time" in order to vote for him in November.
"I haven't always agreed with President Trump. But we agree more often than we disagree," Haley said. "We agree on keeping America strong. We agree on keeping America safe. And we agree that Democrats have moved so far to the left, that they're putting our freedoms in danger. I'm here tonight, because we have a country to save and our unified Republican Party is essential for saving her."
The former ambassador added that a "vote for Joe Biden is a vote for [Vice President] Kamala Harris," and that the country would be far worse off under four more years of Biden and one year of Harris.
"For the sake of our country, we have to go with Donald Trump," she said.
