The Pentagon renamed an auditorium at the headquarters of the Defense Intelligence Agency this month, removing former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper's name and replacing it with that of an officer from the Revolutionary War.

The War Department renamed the “Clapper Leadership Hall” as the “Thomas Knowlton Leadership Hall,” after a continental Army officer who has become known as the “father of American military intelligence," according to the Daily Caller.

“The Thomas Knowlton Leadership Hall at Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) headquarters honors a true American warrior whose legacy is inseparable from the birth of our nation’s intelligence profession," Acting Pentagon Press Secretary Joel Valdez told The Hill. 

"Knowlton was selected by General George Washington in 1776 to form Knowlton’s Rangers, which was America’s first organized military intelligence unit tasked with reconnaissance and gathering critical intelligence behind enemy lines," he continued. “We are excited to have his name as a permanent fixture at the DIA."

The auditorium is located in Washington, D.C.'s Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling and marks the latest change the Trump administration has made to critics of President Donald Trump. For example, the president removed the portrait of retired Gen. Mark Milley, the former chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and a vocal critic of the president, from the Pentagon last year.

Clapper has long been a critic of the president, blasting his handling of defense, national security and foreign policy issues since Trump's first term in office. He also came under fire for allegedly lying to Congress about surveillance of Americans.

The former DNI has denied that he ever lied under oath. He announced and submitted his resignation in 2016, shortly after Donald Trump won the presidential election, but the resignation only took effect on January 20, 2017, when the Obama administration officially ended.
