Police say they arrested a man carrying knife and machete outside the US Capitol
The suspect, 23-year-old Jose Leonardo Marquez, was arrested and charged with carrying a dangerous weapon.
Authorities said that they arrested a man who was carrying a knife and a machete outside of the U.S. Capitol.
According to a statement from the Capitol Police, an officer noticed the man on Tuesday. He was reportedly pacing back and forth on the east side of the Capitol.
The officer noted it as "strange behavior" and later, while talking to the man, also noticed he had a brick in his pocket. He later tossed the brick aside and pulled the knife out and placed it on a ledge.
“Then the officer noticed the handle of a machete under the man’s clothing,” the department said, according to The Hill. “The officer drew his service weapon and ordered the man to put his hands up.”
The suspect, 23-year-old Jose Leonardo Marquez, complied. He was arrested and charged with carrying a dangerous weapon.
“This is another example of the vigilance and strong intuition of our USCP officers,” U.S. Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger said in a statement, The Hill reports. “I am proud of our cops who routinely work to keep everyone around the U.S. Capitol safe.”
As of press time, it is not clear why Marquez was in Washington, D.C. or at the Capitol.
