The U.S. State Department on Thursday issued a worldwide advisory for Americans abroad, urging them to exercise caution while out of the country due to a litany of hazards facings U.S. citizens.

"Due to increased tensions in various locations around the world, the potential for terrorist attacks, demonstrations or violent actions against U.S. citizens and interests, the Department of State advises U.S. citizens overseas to exercise increased caution," the advisory read.

It further urged citizens to "stay alert" in popular tourist destinations and to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to ease communication with the agency in the event of an emergency. The advisory further urged Americans follow the State Department on Facebook and Twitter, which has since been renamed X.

The State Department's warning comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions amid the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine and the Israel-Hamas conflict. The latter war threatens to engulf neighboring nations due to cross-border strikes.
