President Donald Trump on Thursday announced that he was working toward a deal to build a military base in Poland and that negotiations had made "major progress."

"GREAT NEWS! Thanks to the bold leadership of my friend, Karol Nawrocki, President of Poland, major progress is being made toward establishing a U.S. Army base in Poland," he posted on Truth Social. "If this happens, the location will be announced very soon. This will be a historic step for our Great U.S./Polish Alliance. Thank you for your attention to this matter."

Amid the ongoing Ukraine war, NATO allies have sought to shore up their own eastern flank, with the U.S. exploring an eastward shift of its many forces based in Europe.

Poland currently has a relatively conservative president and the country is regarded as a stalwart U.S. ally.
