Trump announces sinking of 9 Iranian navy ships
Iran has since launched a series of counterstrikes, including against civilian vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway through which much of the world's oil flows.
President Donald Trump on Sunday announced that American forces had sunk nine of the Iranian Navy's warships amid the ongoing war with Tehran,
"I have just been informed that we have destroyed and sunk 9 Iranian Naval Ships, some of them relatively large and important," he posted on Truth Social. "We are going after the rest — They will soon be floating at the bottom of the sea, also! In a different attack, we largely destroyed their Naval Headquarters. Other than that, their Navy is doing very well!"
The U.S. and Israel launched a preemptive strike on Iran this week, killing Ayatollah Ali Khomeini and much of the senior leadership.
