The ostensible U.S. war aim was to achieve a commitment from Iran to never possess a nuclear weapon.

President Donald Trump on Monday insisted that Iran was in the early stages of total collapse as the war reaches the six-month mark.

"IRAN IS COMPLETELY COLLAPSING!!!" he posted on Truth Social.

The conflict began in late February, with joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran killing Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Trump initially indicated that he expected a brief conflict, though fighting has persisted for roughly half a year.

The ostensible U.S. war aim was to achieve a commitment from Iran to never possess a nuclear weapon. So far, however, Tehran has been unwilling to make that concession.

Negotiations to end the conflict fell apart several weeks ago, leading to a resumption of hostilities. Intermittent fighting on all fronts had persisted throughout the weeks-long ceasefire, which contributed to the failure of the talks.
