A U.S. citizen who sought to join a terrorist organization and wage a jihad against America following the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel was reportedly scheduled to appear before a federal magistrate in Manhattan Friday.

The Associated Press reports that Karrem Nasr, 23, of Lawrenceville, New Jersey, was arrested on Dec. 14 after flying from Egypt to Kenya, where prosecutors say he was planning to meet with members of the al Shabaab terrorist group. After the meeting, prosecutors say, he would travel to Somalia, where the terror group is based, for training.

Nasr was returned to the U.S. Thursday. He is charged with attempting to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization and faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
