The State Department confirmed Friday that the United States is sending search and rescue teams to Venezuela to help with rescue operations in the aftermath of two massive earthquakes.

The death toll from the earthquakes, which occurred Wednesday, has exceeded 200 people and at least 4,300 people were injured as of Friday. Thousands of other people have been reported missing.

Los Angeles County said it is sending 71 members and six K9 teams from its Fire Department, Public Works and Health Department to join the State Department's team for Venezuela.

"We are proud & thankful to represent the U.S. on this mission, bringing our expertise & compassion to assist those affected by the devastating earthquakes," the LA County Fire Department said on X.

The State Department said it is activating a specialized Task Force and a Disaster Assistance Response Team to help with Venezuela and is coordinating with military assets already in the region to help with the search and rescue operations.

The mobilization comes after President Donald Trump this week ordered federal agencies to prepare to assist Venezuela in the wake of the earthquakes.
