Bidens earned $579,514 last year, according to tax returns

The Bidens paid a federal income tax rate of 23.8%, compared to 2021 in which the first family earned $610,702 and paid a federal income tax of 24.6%.

President Biden and first lady Jill Biden last year made a total income of $579,514, while Vice President Harris and her husband made $456,918, according to White House documents of 2022 tax returns published on Tuesday, the deadline to file 2022 tax returns.

The Bidens paid a federal income tax rate of 23.8%, compared to 2021 in which the first family earned $610,702 and paid a federal income tax of 24.6%. 

"With this release, President Biden has shared a total of 25 years of tax returns with the American public, once again demonstrating his commitment to being transparent with the American people about the finances of the commander-in-chief," the White House said.

A president's annual salary is $400,000, which is the bulk of first family's income. The first lady works as a professor at Northern Virginia Community College and made $82,335. 

The president and first lady paid a combined $169,829 in federal, Delaware, and Virginia income taxes.

They paid $137,658 in federal income tax and $29,023 for Delaware income tax, and the first lady paid $3,139 in Virginia income tax. 

A significant portion of their income was donated to charities, with $20,180 spread across 20 different organizations.

The largest donation was $5,000 to Beau Biden Foundation, which protects children from the threat of abuse, named after the president's late son. 

Vice President Harris and husband Doug Emhoff received an accumulated income of $456,918 in 2022, according to the tax returns released on Tuesday. They paid an effective federal income tax rate of 20.5% and paid $93,570. 

This couple's income was a significant drop from last year's when the second couple earned a combined $1,655,563, at a federal  income tax rate of 31.6%, according to The Hill newspaper

Emhoff earned $582,543 as a lawyer at the law firms DLA Piper and Venable, which he left in 2021 when Harris was sworn into office. 

They paid $17,612 in California income tax, Emhoff paid $9,967 in District of Columbia income tax for teaching at Georgetown University, and they couple gave $23,000 to charity in 2022.
