Former President George Bush praised Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine in remarks Wednesday at an event commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

Caine, who is President Donald Trump's top military adviser, was among the military pilots who patrolled the Washington, D.C., airspace in the aftermath of 9/11 and later served in Bush's White House.

“Thank God you are where you are, and we appreciate it,” Bush said to Caine. He made the remarks while speaking with his former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice from his presidential center at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.

The context for Bush's praise of Caine appears to be that the general reportedly had warned Trump earlier this year against a war with Iran, claiming the United States' limited stockpile of munitions and little support from allies would put military personnel in danger and hamper a large-scale operation, according to The Hill.

Also, Caine reportedly has since told other top Trump advisers that the U.S. needs to end the conflict soon because escalating the war is likely to backfire.
