New polls finds Biden administration curtailing Title 42 'most unpopular decision so far'

A poll released Wednesday finds Team Biden curtailing the use of federal law Title 42 to prevent foreigners from bringing COVID-19 into the U.S. is "this administration’s most unpopular decision so far."

To be sure, ending the Trump administration's use of the 1940s law as a public health matter during the pandemic was unpopular among Republicans.

But the new Morning Consult poll found 56% of those survey said no when asked whether they "support the Biden administration’s removal of border controls put in place by the Trump administration in March 2020." Among them, roughly 42% strongly disapproved.

The pollsters also said the voter response represents "the largest backlash against a Biden administration policy among dozens" tracked by them since January 2021.

In addition, they said that from day one of Biden's presidency their survey data has shown his executive actions on immigration to be his "most unpopular" and "even when the president was enjoying favorable approval ratings early on, voters tended to disapprove of his handling of the issue."

Among Republicans, 88% approved of the end of Title 42 enforcement, set for May 23, according to the poll.

Among Democrats, which would include party lawmakers worried about not have a plan to stop using Title 42, 27% disapproved on ending it use, compared to 60% who approved of its ending and 13% who "didn't know."

The polls was conducted April 1-4 among a representative sample of 2,003 registered U.S. voters, with a margin of error of  2 percentage points.
