Biden speaks with Trump after assassination attempt, reelection campaign pauses some activities

President Joe Biden on Saturday evening said he was "grateful" to hear that presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump was doing well after an assassination attempt on him at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday afternoon.

"I’m grateful to hear that he’s safe and doing well," Biden said in a statement. "I’m praying for him and his family and for all those who were at the rally, as we await further information.

"Jill and I are grateful to the Secret Service for getting him to safety. There’s no place for this kind of violence in America."

The president told the country later in a press briefing that everyone should unite together to condemn the shooting and that every law enforcement agency is working on investigating the incident.

“The bottom line is, the Trump rally ... should have been able to be conducted peacefully without any problem. But the idea that there’s political violence or violence in America like this is just unheard of, is just not appropriate,” Biden said in Delaware. “Everybody must condemn it. Everybody.”

Biden is also returning early to the White House from is summer home outside of Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, from where he gave the short speech.

In addition, the Biden campaign is pausing all outbound communications and working to pull down our television ads as quickly as possible," a Biden campaign official told news outlets.

The White House said late Saturday that Biden spoke with Trump, after at least on unsuccessful attempt earlier in the evening and that the president will convene a briefing with homeland security and law enforcement officials at the White House on Sunday morning, according to the Associated Press.
