President Donald Trump is expected to host the Kennedy Center Honors ceremony on Sunday night, marking a presidential first as Trump takes a more active role in the ceremony and center this year.

The president became the chairman of the Kennedy Center board earlier this year, after ousting the previous members and replacing them with some of his own allies. He also appointed former acting Director of National Intelligence Ric Grenell to overhaul the center's programming.

The ceremony will honor the rock band KISS, disco icon Gloria Gaynor, country music star George Strait, renowned actor Sylvester Stallone and Broadway legend Michael Crawford.

"This is a group of icons whose work and accomplishments have inspired, uplifted and unified millions and millions of Americans," Trump said during a ceremony at the White House Saturday. "This is perhaps the most accomplished and renowned class of Kennedy Center Honorees ever assembled."

Another change to the Kennedy Center Honors program this year is the medallion that each recipient is awarded. This year's medallion was designed, created and donated by jeweler Tiffany & Co.

The medal is a gold disc that features the Kennedy Center's image and rainbow colors on one side and the recipient's name on the reverse side with the date of the ceremony.

The formal ceremony will take place on Sunday at 7 p.m. Eastern, but will not air until Dec. 23 on the CBS Television Network and Paramount+.
